Breakfast to raise funds to refurbish Jack Lavender Field! |
10/31/11
SANDLOTT Mid-State News: On November 19, from 7AM - 10AM, at Lipscomb University, the Middle Tennessee Baseball Foundation will be hosting Jack Lavender Holiday Breakfast. For those of you that don't know this, Mr. Lavender used to invite all friends of the baseball community to Jack Lavender field for a large group breakfast around the holidays. It was a tradition that he carried out until he was unable to do so the past few years. It was nothing to see hundreds of people come and go from the press box at Twitty City's home field on what was usually a Saturday morning to grab a plate of food and talk baseball or life with people they had not seen in years.
This is a free breakfast for anybody that wants to attend. However, donations will be accepted. Per the Lavender family request, all donations will go back into the renovation of Jack Lavender field. If you cannot attend but would like to contribute to the project please feel free to email me at duck34_aes@yahoo.com.
Thank You,

Murfreesboro Diamondbacks Celebrate Magical Season! |
08/13/11
SANDLOTT Mid-State 18u News: The Murfreesboro Diamondbacks magical postseason run came to end at the Holy Grail of summer baseball, the Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, New Mexico. They were the first team from Middle TN since 1972 to qualify for this event. The Dbacks lost their first game 3-1 to the DBAT Mustangs from Dallas, Texas. Johnathan Frebis pitched a great game in front of a crowd of 6,000 plus, striking out 7 in 6 innings of work, allowing only 1 earned run. The Ann Arbor Travelers eliminated the Dbacks the next night in a very emotional contest 4-3 in front of a packed house of almost 7,000 fans. After taking a 3-2 lead into the 5th inning, the Dbacks could not hang on as the Travelers clawed back to score 2 and eventually hold on for the win.
The Diamondbacks represented Middle Tennessee with a lot of pride, class and great character over the week and Middle TN should be proud of these young men. The Midland Redskins won their 13th Connie Mack National Title on Friday night. As the awards were handed out during the post game ceremony, a loud ovation took place when anounced that the Murfreesboro, TN Diamondbacks had won the Sportsmanship Award for the 2011 Connie Mack World Series. These players won a spot in the hearts of the community of Farmington, New Mexico and made memories and friends that will last a lifetime while doing so.

Rob Mackey, Sandlotter programer dies! |
08/12/11
Sandlotter News: It is with great sadness that I post the below news. Farrell Owens - The Sandlotter--------
Rob Mackey, Sandlotter web site designer/programer passed away on August 10, 2011 at the young age of 56. He was a personal friend to Mickey Hiter and Farrell Owens and a very important part of SANDLOTT Baseball and the Sandlotter web site. He will be missed in many ways. His wit and positive nature always helped us find our way. His involvement as a real baseball guy who coached and umpired gave him great insight into what we needed to make the web site the ribbon that ties youth baseball together in TN and throughout the U.S. and Canada. Although Rob stayed behind the scenes as the technological arm of SANDLOTT Baseball his influence will continue to live on each time someone logs onto Sandlotter.com.--------
Rob's death notice:
Mackey, Robert Age 56, born in New Lenox, Illinois, passed away August 10, 2011 at Good Samaritan Hospital with his sister and children by his side. Rob enjoyed living in California for many years before moving back to the Chicago land area in the early 80's. Rob always said his greatest joy in life was his children Robby (25) and Mabel (22). The three of them loved and supported one another. They shared great times together during Rob's life. Rob developed computer software and ran his own business for many years. In 2001, he was hired by Continental Amateur Baseball Association (CABA) to develop and run programs and tournaments for the Ho-Chunk baseball complex in Lynwood. Baseball was his passion. For over 40 years, he coached and umpired youth baseball, making a significant impact on many lives. Rob is also survived by his parents Bob (Marilyn) Mackey and LaVerle Mackey, mother of his children, Laura Brady, his nieces Jennifer (Bryan) Lindskog and Sarah Silverman, and his devoted sister Ruth (David) Silverman. Rob was surrounded by many terrific friends who admired his independent spirit, including Arlene Berger, Omar Caballero, Sue Nabhan, and Fran and Nancy Pell. His family would like to thank the amazing staff of the oncology unit of Good Samaritan Hospital who brought him comfort and care during his courageous battle with cancer. According to Rob's wishes, his body was donated to science for medical research. A celebration of Rob's life will be held on Saturday August 13th, at Ho-Chunk Baseball Complex, 10 Southland Drive, Lynwood, IL, beginning at 3pm. In lieu of flowers donations to be used according to the family's wishes would be appreciated.

Buford ( Mudcat ) Brewer going into the MTSU Baseball Hall of Fame! |
08/09/11
Sandlotter News: Coaches. Just had to make sure that you all knew that Buford ( Mudcat ) Brewer is being inducted into the Middle Tennessee State University ( MTSU ) Baseball Hall of Fame this October 29th. The Sandlotter was privileged to cover Mudcat during his sandlot days. In 1991 Mudcat was selected the MVP of the Stan Musial League.
Mudcat was drafted by the Colorado Rockies out of MTSU and was playing in class A ball when he collided with another outfielder and tore ligaments in his knee. This ended Mudcat’s professional baseball career. Even though Mudcat has been gone 17 years from the baseball program at MTSU he is still in the top ten for nine offensive categories.
For the past several years this 1990 Smyrna High School graduate has been active in coaching high school and sandlot baseball in Rutherford County. The last 10 years he has been a teacher and assistant baseball coach at Blackman High School. This school year he will be an assistant principal at Brown’s Chapel Elementary in Rutherford County. The Sandlotter is so proud of Mudcat and wanted all of you to know of his latest accomplishment. Farrell Owens – The Sandlotter www.sandlotter.com

SANDLOTT Players star in Major Leagues! |
09/26/10
SANDLOTT Mid-State League News: Sandlotter News: Steve Liddle was associated with the league that the Sandlotter covers. If you do not know Steve, he is the bench coach for the Minnesota Twins. The Twins clinched the American League Central Division championship this past week. They will be going to the playoffs!
Steve was a standout catcher at McGavock High School and went on to become an All-American at Lipscomb University. Steve then signed with the California Angels and advanced to their AAA club before deciding to become a coach in their organization.
Two other intriguing situations with former players from the SANDLOTT league. Will Murfresboro's David Price ( Blackman High School and Vanderbilt University star ) be a 20 game winner? He has 18 wins with two more starts. Good Luck David. Will R.A. Dickey ( MBA and University of Tennessee star ) parlay his breakout season into a big multi-year contract? Stay tuned. I continue to be impressed with our coaches and players and our former players and coaches. I am confident that the SANDLOTT league will continue to produce more folks like R.A., Steve and David.
